GUEST POST- ManFace Skincare, Skin Prep

Not many people, outside the companies I've worked, for that over the last 6 years, I have been trained professionally in makeup artistry. I have been taught flawless base looks from Clinique Education and natural eye looks by Chase Aston. However, my choice was to specialise in skincare and with running a male grooming and skincare website, I don't get to flex my literary muscle in the direction of makeup very often.

So, for Andrew James, I thought I'd amalgamate the two, and give you, his readers, a guide to setting up your skin for the perfect base.

Ask yourself –

Is my base only lasting by mid day?

Do I find almost no trace of makeup by the time I get home?

Are powders clumping up and looking dusty? Well. Read on…

Cleanse, Tone, Exfoliate, Treat and Moisturise. I have very little patience for toning, for reasons that are too long to go into here, but it's a little bit of a false prophecy, far better to exfoliate well, gently and often

Firstly, know your skin type. You're skin-type is a pretty tangible thing that can change year by year and season by season and should not be confused with skin concerns which are skin problems, whereas your type refers to the balance of oil and water.. Go to your favourite skincare counter and find out what it is, any cosmeticist worth their weight should be able to accurately skin type you.

On a side note, if you have spots, don't ignore it, it's the worst thing I've had to deal with over the years is clients in denial. We all get them from time to time, and pretending you don't can lead to them becoming worse; your makeup will never look its best, as there are different products and techniques you need to use to combat this concern.

For a good makeup base, exfoliation is key and it's shocking how many of us don't do it enough. I am an advocate of chemical exfoliation, so look for products that contain ingredients such as salicylic acid, a natural and effective exfoliant. Strong physical scrubs are not always the best for facial skin, removing skin cells whilst also causing micro-damage. I use alternating combinations of clarifying lotion, a clarisonic device and tretinoin but find what's best for you; doing it once a day/twice a day with something gentle is far better than twice/three times a week with something powerful. If you've not exercised for a while, you start slow and this is the same with exfoliation.

By removing dead skin cells, you leave your skin's surface smooth and event, allowing makeup to more easily bond to it and prevent a build up of dead skin cells from excessively falling away during the day, taking your makeup with it.

Cleansing is hugely important, and I'm sorry, makeup wipes just don't cut it. They never remove all your makeup, and although are useful at 4am as you drunkly claw away your smeared lipstick, they should never be used regularly as a makeup cleanser. By leaving trace amounts of makeup on your skin as you sleep, clogs your pores and ultimately results in spots. Facial washes are also not makeup removers, and I applaur you not to use 2-in-1 products. It's either a makeup remover, or, a facial wash.

A makeup remover should dissolve makeup effectively, giving you a clear surface to then wash – removing dirt, bacteria and debris. Someone told me a while ago that using a facial wash over makeup is like getting in the shower with your clothes on, it just won't reach your skin.

Finally, the use of a primer is always a bonus. This is where your skin concern comes into play. If you have redness, then use a green base primer. Hypo-pigmentation / Age Spots, use a purple primer. Oiliness, a mattifier, and dryness, a radiance enhancer.

There are literally hundreds available on the market, designed to counteract most skin concerns, find one that works for you. Only every apply a small amount, as they are designed to sit on the surface on the skin, therefore too much will cause your makeup to move around and not sit as well as you'd like.

Give this all a try and I guarantee your makeup will look better than if you don't.

Experiment, play, research and remember, if a friend recommends something, check if you have the same skin type or concern, as something that works for one person, doesn't necessarily work for another. Tweet me @Manfaceblog with any questions or to ask about product recommendations.

Oriflame Cosmetics Review

Hey Beauties!

I have been testing out these products I have been sent by Oriflame apparently they are an older brand, my mum even remembers then and trust me..... that's old haha.
So i was sent a few things as you can see in the picture below im going to break down the picture and talk about each individual product and what I think of them.

Left to right:
Bronzing Pearls, Studio Artist Foundation, Loose Powder, Eyeshadow Duo,
Hyper Stretch Mascara, Eyeliner Stylo
First of all i thought this was quite cute the packaging wise, it reminds me a lot of Avon just because of the way the items are presented.

Studio Artist Foundation
I think this foundation is quite good but im not too sure on the packaging of it i would have much preferred a pump bottle because you squeeze this even slightly and lots of product comes out. As for the Product its self i cant fault it, I would say it was a medium coverage foundation with a dewy finish and a little goes a long way as I found out i had wasted some when using it which i think isnt great. There is another good thing about this foundation is it has a SPF of 15, I wouldn't know how this photographs but I would love to find out. The foundation contains 30ml of product so about standard for foundations and retails for £9.95* Overall i think this foundation looks good on skin i would recommend it for people for Normal/Dry skin because i think it might be a bit to Oily for Oily Skin. You can find the product by clicking here

I quite like this powder but i dont think i would use it on Photoshoots because i have something superior but i think for everyday use this powder is great, its a clear translucent powder which is quite finely milled and when pressed in to the skin to it gives a silky finish to the skin, i think this powder would be great for people who have oily skin because it seems to work really well that way but also it has "Illuma Flair" which Oriflame describe as "light-reflecting Illuma Flair™ complex for a natural and luminous result in any light."
Overall I think this is just another powder really nothing special or new about it but worth a try, it contains 7g of product for £10.95* and can be found by clicking here

These are the Bronzing Pearls in Natural Bronze, i have to admit i dont like this product at all. these pearls are far to orange for my liking as you will see in the picture below i tried to get some pigment off them and couldn't see anything coming up until i took a picture with Flash, id hate to see what would have happened if I had actually used them. If you wish to buy them you can buy them here and they retail for £16.95* for 25g of product.
As you can see above it just looks really orangey and almost like rust

I do quite like this product but again its nothing new or anything different, Oriflame quotes "Achieve high colour precision with this advanced ink liner. Its fine applicator delivers exact colour which dries quickly and won’t smudge or fade." which is what it does to be honest, this pen is pigmented and creates perfect lines depending on the amount of pressure you apply and drawing the line, I agree with the fact the it dries quickly, doesn't smudge or fade. You can find the eyeliner stylo here for £6.95* and you get 1.6g of product

These eyeshadows are alright if you know how to use them, alone they arnt that impressive, poor pigmentation but sort of creamy. I found if i scraped a little out onto a palette and mixed it with sealing gel from Illamasqua and foiled the shadow it looked far better and the pigmentation was far better as well.
Once I added the sealing gel and tried to use it that way i was pleasantly surprised about how they looked. The difference isnt massive but it is at more pigmented now
I think over all these are okay foiled for everyday use.You can buy these from the Oriflame website i couldnt find a link or price to these so you might have to tweet @OriflameUKLtd  to find out.

Overall I think like all brand there hit and miss products, I like the Eyeliner stylo and the foundation. I will have a separate review up soon on the Mascara as I haven't tried that out yet on someone.

What do you think?
Have you tried Oriflame before?

MUA Cosmetics Heaven and Earth Palette Review

Hey Beauties ;)
So I bought a MUA palette recently after all the hype on here, I knew how good the single eyeshadows and lipsticks are so I thought id give a Palette a good and I can say I was pleasantly surprised.

They look quite awesome packaging wise quite Sleek-esque but see through which i find is awesome because I can see what palette it is from looking at it. My palette is a bit hard to open but its worth it
These palettes contain 12 eyeshadows which are all shimmer, glittery or satin, when i first got it i didnt have high hopes because Im not one for £4 but I was wrong the texture of these shadows is not powdery at all like some but they are quite creamy.

As you can see there are different neutral tones which i look great on i like to use a base with these to get proper pay off from then ((Base- Cream product)) I have swatched these below with flash and without

These are both rows of colours, with base and without i think they look so much better with a base under them because it just catches the pigment better

As I mentioned these palette are £4 each and are available from Superdrug the Professional range is only available at selected Superdrug stores but you can find your nearest by using this or you can order online from http://www.muastore.co.uk/

What do you think of MUA?
Have you used these palettes before?

Horizon-The Truth About Looking Young Review

 Dr Rozina Ali from Horizon
Hey Beauties,
So after watching Horizon The Truth About Looking Young last night i thought to myself that i would discuss some points regarding skin and looking young and what is on the market now to help us and what might be on the market in the future such as would an actual UVA/UVB Pill be possible and in the programme they said it would be possible because the "ingredients" if you will are found in natural and could be made into pill form

Imagine- You take a pill once a day and it protects you from the damage of the sun it will protect against the ageing properties of UVA and the Burning properties of UVB from the suns radiation on our skin. Apparently it will be absorbed into our cells and protect them which I find amazing
The doctor who was leading this experiment said that within 5 years there might be something like this on the market.

My thoughts were that who ever is going to be able to manufacture something of this magnitude will revolutionise the way he see sun protection no more creams just one simple pill once a day to protect against sun damage. This might sound bad but from a business stand point imagine how much money and fame you could make from something like this it would be astronomical

If you think about it right now there are things on the market that are supposed to help us stave off ageing notice i said "supposed to" if this comes around even from the protection we will look younger for longer, right now there are things like collagen pills or collagen creams on the market which are supposed to make our skin better more firm and younger when in fact it is a big lie. The Collagen molecule is basically what gives our skin the youthful bounce and glow once we age and get older it starts to disappear due to different facts like environment and so on but this is where the "con" comes in i guess you could call it. Collagen is too large of a molecule to be adsorbed through the skin or to be even metabolised in our systems so its just either icing or a dummy pill as it does nothing, in the sense of being icing, the collagen will fill your wrinkles and make everything look plump until it wears off or is removed as i said above it has no long term effects because it cannot be absorbed or metabolised

They also talked about another pill you could take which would basically rewind time not to a massive extent but the extent of refining wrinkles, woman were put on this pill for 14 weeks and after 14 weeks there were changes nothing massive but a step in the right direction, it was basically something that could help regenerate the collagen basically the fibroblasts would stop being like spaghetti and start to produce more collagen

anyway sorry for this massive long worded post i just wanted to discuss it with everyone

What do you think?
Could we see a change in ageing?

Keep your skin looking good for Models- Cat Bates

Hey all!! It's been a while since my last little post, but here I am again!! :)

I have been asked to do a little post about how to help keep a good skin care regime. This is SO important for models. Your face is a blank canvas, it is there for a make up artist to work their magic and transform that blank canvas into a work of art. No matter what the type of photoshoot, whether its a natural look, all rocked up, creative with glitter, gems and accessories..the list is endless! You need to have a good base for make up artists to work with..so how can you achieve this?!
If you are a lucky few who don't have problem skin, can just wake up with a beautiful fresh face with a splash of water, or a little wipe then I am very jealous! However, if you are prone to blemishes, spots, breakouts, or just want some tips and ideas to keep your skin looking and feeling refreshed then read on! :)

Please note, that these are all my own personal opinions on what I have experienced myself, this is what I do to help keep my skin looking the best it can. :)

Always always always remove your make up before you go to bed! If you haven’t worn make up that day, still, give your face a nice little clean.
I always use a facial wipe to take off the majority of the make up. I then use a cleanser and some lovely soft cotton wool, you would be surprised at how much make up can still be left on your face!  I wait a minute or two before I get out my toner, again used on cotton wool. When using my cleanser and toner I use upwards motion, I believe this is to help get into all the pores, and remove as much dirt and make up as possible. Once I have finished with the cleanser and toner (the cotton wool no longer has traces of make up or dirt) I use a gorgeous moisturiser to make my skin feel gorgeous! Then I sleep!!!
In the morning, I usually only use a facial wipe and some moisturiser. Because my skin is sensitive, I often find if I do my night time routine more than once a day, my skin becomes very blotchy, flaky, oily, and generally not in great condition!
I have started to use a face mask, once a week. This makes my skin feel beautiful! I find if I use it the day after a photoshoot, when I have had a lot of product on, off, on and off again it help to bring it back to its normal self again.

I also keep my eyebrows in good shape...I don't give them a work out :P But I do make sure that there are no stray hairs and the shape of them are kept quite natural. Please note, that I am aware that everyone has different views on how they want their eyebrows to look, from thick and unplucked/waxed, to little lines or non existent (pencilled in) ..this is if course personal preference! :)
It's not only eyebrows that you have to take care of..and this one can be a bit of a touchy subject..but some women can have a bit of a hairy upper lip (could just be a couple of hairs are darker than rest on face, or could be a genetic thing, or ethnicity). If you have never noticed this before, don't be offended when a photographer, or make up artist tell you to “get it sorted” (like anything, being nice about it helps!) look into it, ask the make up artist what they would recommend.

Please be aware, that this is only opinion of one person. If you have any serious concern for your skin, go and speak to your doctor. Any problem skin may be able to be treated with prescription lotions and creams. Your doctor may also be able to advise you on anything dietary that may be a cause of bad skin problem and anything else that may factor in!

I hope you all enjoyed this post...Please feel free to comment and ask questions!! :)

Requested- My Professional Brushes and how do I wash them during a shoot

Hey Beauties!
Yesterday i got a comment on my Whats in my Makeup Artist Kit post and it said:

"can you do a post on your professional brush collection and
how you wash them during a shoot "

So I thought I would do this post for you today! On shoots i use a vareity of different brushes which are kept in my brush belt. usually I will be working on either 1 model or more the one as much as 10 models as I once did myself at a Bridal Show. For this kind of gig you will need obviously a lot of different brushes but as you guys know how clumsy and forgetful I am, I often loose brushes haha

So all my brushes are kept in this Brush Belt as you can see i have Face brushes to the left and eye brushes to the right i use a selection of different brands such as: MAC, Illamasqua, Real Techniques by Samantha Chapman, Chanel, Royal and Langnickle, Laura Mercier, NARS etc

I really like this brush belt because it actually goes small enough to fit my waist, I have had brush belts that are to big for me but this awesome and believe it or not its from ELF Cosmetics
The Pockets are large enough for different sizes of brushes i find the pockets at the back are larger and better for the face brushes but I don't like how deep some of the pockets are because i end up loosing brushes in it

To show you my brushes i have take a picture of them all laid out:

As you can see above i use different brushes for different things, i go by the rule that a brush doesnt need to be used for its intended purpose. I use blending brushes like the 217 and the 224 from MAC for Concealer sometimes or brushes like the Illamasqua Highlight brush and the MAC 109 for Foundation
The Pink Handled Blush brush from Real Techniques by Samantha Chapman is my go to brush for Loose Powder.

I find that a mix of real hair and synthetic brushes works amazing because you need synthetic brushes to work with creams as real hair just clogs up and doesn't work with cream in all honesty. If i had to choose to work with either real hair or synthetic I would choose synthetic everytime because you can use powders creams liquids anything with synthetic but with real hair it clogs up a lot if you use stuff like creams and liquids in my experience. Illamasqua Brushes are all synthetic which i love because they are the softest brushes ever and when you use them to apply makeup you can clearly see a difference a good difference because they are just perfectly crafted.

On Photoshoots i will clean my brushes with MAC Brush Cleaner which i just pour into a little spray bottle and use from there i will spray the brush and then just swirl it about and clean it on a peice of tissue and lay it down flat to dry. I find that using the MAC Brush Cleaner to deep clean your brushes doesnt work very well because you end up using the whole bottle on the first go but using a Baby shampoo or a deep cleaning shampoo for brushes works just as well and doesnt harm your brushes as you can see from mine
Brush Brushes do you love the best?
How do you store your brushes?

What does a Makeup Artist use on Photoshoots?

Whats in my Makeup Artist Kit?
Hey Beauties!
So I thought I would do a post on what i keep in my Kit for a Standard Photoshoot. Usually I will change up my kit depending on what the theme of the shoot is but I have some stuff that don't ever change usually its mostly palettes that change and the single eyeshadows I use

So to start with I usually keep my skin prep stuff in a separate bag on top of my traincase cause it doesnt fit into the suitcase hah
Usually in this bag i keep things like:

  • Cleanser
  • Toner
  • Makeup Removers
  • Primers
  • Skin Prep
  • Sprays

Some of my favourites are Chanel, Illamasqua, Laura Mercier, The Body Shop etc.

When my traincase is close i usually keep things in the pockets on the front in the top pocket i keep things like:

  • Disposable Mascara Wands - SO IMPORTANT
  • Powder Puffs
  • Individual Lashes
  • Tail Comb
  • Spirit Gum
  • Sharpie
  • Business Cards

I really like this little bag because its small enough to hold all of my little things like :

  • Tweezers- I have 4 pairs of tweezers
  • Scissors- I have about 3 pairs in there
  • Hair Clips
  • Hand Sanitiser
  • Liner Sharpener from The Body Shop
  • Eyelash Curlers
  • Eyelash Glue- Duo and Latex Free
  • Wig Cap

I keep all my Concealers in a Black zippy makeup bag which was from the Body Shop and its quite large so its awesome
as you can see to the left i keep a few types of concealers from ones for under eyes, blemishes, correcting etc

My favourite brand of concealer right now would be the Soap and Glory Kick Ass Concealer

Mascaras/Single Eyeshadows/Primers are kept in my little cute Hello Kitty makeup bag I got from Boots a while ago. This is the bag that changes the most because there is always something different going into it besides the Mascara and Gel Eyeliners which are always in there.

I keep a selection of different palettes for different shoots the last shoot i did was bright colours and it was a shoot with Ian Lynchahon and Jennifer Chapman both amazing photographers

To the left there are different palettes ranging from £2 to about £150

  • MAC Pro Colour Palettes- Eyeshadow and Blush
  • Laura Mericer
  • VIVO Cosmetics
  • MUA Cosmetics
  • Dior
  • Sleek Makeup
  • Makeup Atelier
  • The Naked Palette

I keep a selection of different foundations ranging in colours and textures from light to medium and then full coverage. I often like to mix things together or sheer things out

I keep a range of different foundations but for the most part I use:

  • Illamasqua- Skin Base, Light Liquid and Rich Liquid
  • MAC - Face and Body
  • The Body Shop Moisture Foundations
  • Kevyn Aucoin Foundations
  • Sleek makeup
  • Stilla
  • Benefit
  • ELF
  • MAC
  • Various Drug store

I really like this bag because it contains things that make your skin better, i feel with makeup if you prep well and have good skin and keep having good skin then you will have a better makeup application and your makeup will look better as well
i keep things like:

  • Nivea Cream for Body Moisturising
  • Lip Balms
  • Witch Doctor Treatment
  • Body Shop vitamin C Skin Reviver
  • Eye Creams and Serums

Im having a real big thing for cream blushes lately so im trying to use them more because they arn't as flat as powder blushes not to mention they give the skin this amazing youthful radiance.

I use brands such as:

  • Illamasqua
  • Revlon
  • Guerlain
  • NARS
  • Yves Saint Laurent
  • Gosh
  • Max Factor
  • No.7
  • Benefit

I honestly dont know why I carry so much Liners because to be honest I hardly ever use them. I use the lip liners mostly rather than the eyeliners if I was doing eyeliner I would use a gel liner most of the time

I dont even know why there is a Beauty powder in here haha
Anyway, i like to use loose powders more because i feel they work better not to mention its easier having a translucent powder for everyone that 50 different shades it saves so much more time as well
Chanel 20 Clair is Translucent as well as the MAC Prep+Prime

I kind of go over board on lipsticks and lip stuff just because I love doing lips haha
I must have about 80 different lipsticks every one is different plus numerous different brands and types of lip glosses and stains.

If you guys have anything you want to share leave me a comment i would love to see what makeup you have in your kit or in your makeup bag just because im a nosy person haha

So what did you think of my Kit?
Did it help you?

bareMinerals High Shine Eyecolour Review

Hey Beauties!
I thought I would do a review on something I've been meaning to do for ages now and its a review of the bareMinerals High Shine Eyecolour that I was given at an event for bareMinerals a while ago.

So this little cute eyeshadow is basically a pigment that you can apply with the little spongey thing or you can use a brush being a makeup artist i use a brush as I feel it works better. High Shine Eyecolour is a really cute and creative idea, you have to pump the lid up and down to get some of the product and then you are supposed to swipe across your eye but I would rather use a brush. I find that you would need to do eyes and then foundation as you get a bit of fall out from this if you use too much.
I received the colour "Gunmetal Grey" which is a grey toned gunmetal as the name says I often find when you mix it with other tones it turns kind of blue, I dont if its just me that sees it but its gorgeous colour nonetheless

When they say this is a High Shine Eyecolour they mean it, there is such a gorgeous sheen to it when applied and when blended through. I find using a base underneath helps, I use the Prime Time Shadow base which I was also given by bareMinerals.

Even without a base you can see above that it is still a great colour. The 2 things I love about these is how pigmented and easily they blend they almost feel creamy.
bareMinerals High Shine Eyecolour retail for £15 each and you get 1.5g of product in each tube, thats the same a one of the MAC single eyeshadows

Do you like Pigment Eyeshadows?
Have you tried these?

MUA Cosmetics Lip Boom- Review

Hey Beauties,
So I thought I would do a review on these Lip Bloom's by MUA and review them from a Makeup Artist perspective.
So would I use these on Photoshoots?

Of course I would and I will tell you why. It comes in a few different parts- a Lipstick which is matte then a lip gloss which is sparkly and glittery and utterly gorgeous then there is a bit on the bottom which pops off according to MUA Cosmetics tweet:

I really think these are a great thing to have because we all know how hard it is to find a really good and for £3 its a great deal because you are getting 4 different combinations of product, now to the actual product :

The Lipstick:
I really like the lipstick because it has a really soft finish to it even though it would be considered Matte it doesn't look or feel dry. It applies well but I would suggest using a lip liner with it as well as blotting and making sure your lips are perfectly conditioned.

The Gloss:
This gloss is quite weird but a good weird, i like how it looks sparkly and glittery as hell which remind me of quick a thick dazzleglass from MAC. Alone the gloss is nothing special in fact quite a boring normal gloss but once its paired with the lipstick it looks amazing although the glitter in some of the shades is "chunkier" but thats fine because it really suits the shade. Over all i dont think the gloss is that sticky and it does look amazing when applied

Overall I really think these are a really great product and i can see them being useful on shoots that i will be doing, I especially love the Purple/Plum Shade its gorgeous!
MUA Professional is available from selected superdrug stores you can find the list HERE

What do you think of MUA?
Have you tried the Lip Booms?

Illamasqua Cream Pigment in Hollow- Review and Tips

Hey Beauties!
I thought i would do a review on the Illamasqua Cream Pigment in Hollow as i have been getting a lot of questions from people about contouring.
Its described as a Cream that can be used on the lips, cheeks, eyes anywhere on the face really. Cream Pigments came out with the Toxic Nature Collection back in Spring/Summer 2011

I have to say I really do love the packaging as usual with Illamasqua it has their signature shape which i think is so cute! The lids comes off to reveal the product inside. I really like the whole clear base thing because it helps when im looking for different colours in my kit

The pigmentation and constancy of this is quite like a thick concealer yet creamy at the same time they dont set and they crease like hell, but if you use a powder on top they stay perfectly.

As you can see from the swatch above its quite a greyish taupe colour which makes an awesome base for the lids and even as a lip colour it might sound crazy but Michael James uses this as a lip colour and it looked different but amazing! I have also used it for contouring as i said at the start, it is great for this reason because its such a shadowy colour its perfect for those of you have really pale skin but you do have to be careful because it will go quite muddy.
The video below is the video that Michael James did on the same product!

What do you think of Cream Pigments?
Have you tried them before?
